1 state constitution
Основной закон штата. Каждый штат [ state] имеет свою конституцию, которая не может противоречить Конституции США [ Constitution of the United States]. Большинство первых конституций были приняты в период Войны за независимость [ Revolutionary War] и представляли собой краткие документы. В XIX в. они неоднократно дополнялись и дописывались, превратившись в объемистые сборники законов. С начала XX в. конституции штатов практически не менялись. Поскольку штаты располагают всеми прерогативами власти за исключением делегированных федеральным органам, конституции штатов предусматривают, в основном, ограничения, налагаемые на законодательную и исполнительную власть на местах. Являются, как правило, детализированными документами, разобраться в которых в состоянии лишь правоведы.
